The 13th edition of the University Football League opened with drama and defiance at the refurbished Hamz Stadium on Thursday, serving up three goals, a red card and a heroic goalkeeping display.

In the dayโ€™s opener, two-time champions Kampala University (KU) held reigning titleholders Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) to a tense 0โ€“0 draw.

New KU goalkeeper Wafula David was the star, pulling off three superb saves to frustrate UMUโ€™s forwards and earn coach Vincent Tumusiime a valuable point.

Komakech Emmanuel struck in the third minute, only for ISBATโ€™s Akantambira Daniel to level three minutes later.

Kyambogo goalkeeper Mushemeza Edgarโ€™s red card early in the second half left his side under siege, but substitute Odong Ivan broke away in the 82nd minute to seal a famous win.

ISBAT protested a missed penalty call moments earlier, but the referee waved play on, sparking wild celebrations from the Kyambogo faithful.

The victory puts Kyambogo top of Group C with three points and a dream return to the competition.

Action resumes Friday when 2019 champions Uganda Christian University host Ndejje University in Mukono.
