Makerere University returned to the Pepsi University Football League for the 2022 edition having been absent for four years due to hooliganism.
Back with an intent of winning another title, the most prestigious higher learning institution in Uganda was among the teams that failed to go past the group stages.
The 2012 champions seem to not have learnt any lessons from their four-year absence because due to fans’ hooliganism against YMCA, they were docked four points and four goals which ultimately cost them a place in the quarterfinals.
Makerere finished second in Group D with nine points, two adrift of leaders St. Lawrence University who collected 11 points while YMCA gathered eight points in third place.
At the Bottom of Group D was the Mbarara University of Science and Technology with a single point.
Away from the hill of knowledge, other universities that made it to the knockout stages include; defending champions Uganda Christian University and Makerere University Business School as Group A and B winners.
Elsewhere, 2018 champions Kyambogo University and 2017 champions Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi topped groups C and E while Bugema University also advanced as group F winners.
To make the required number of teams to play in the quarterfinals, the best two second-placed teams in Nkumba and Kumi Universities from groups B and A respectively made the cut.
However, Kumi has a pending case and if the committee rules against them, group E runners-up Kampala University will take up the slot.
