Coach Onyango Tolbert, on Thursday morning, named the new-look Uganda Rugby Sevens squad that will represent the 2022 Africa Champions in the Munich edition of the HSBC World Challenger Series.
Norbert Okeny, William Nkore, and Alex Aturinda will be the pack of three leaders to steer the Cranes on, who have seen eight changes from the squad that went to Montevideo.
Last week, Coach Tolbert confirmed the release of seven players to their clubs for immediate game action until 1st June. The released were Ian Munyani, Pius Ogena, Adrian Kasito, Isaac Massanganzira, Timothy Kisiga, Desire Ayera and Aaron Ofoywroth. Philip Wokorach is the eighth name that Uganda won’t be cheering on in Munich.
“We have a mic of experience and young bulls who are hungry and have put their hands up in training. This is an opportunity to test themselves at the top level against teams vying for the HSBC core status,” said Coach Tolbert.
Mathematically, Coach Onyango Tolbert’s boys are turning their focus on the 2025 series to make the 2026 SVNS roster. The Cranes sit in 8th position on 14 points from two rounds, with 4 points from Dubai and 10 from Montevideo.
The top four teams after Munich will go up against the bottom four on the 2024 HSBC log in Madrid for one last round of qualifiers for the 2025 main roster.
Uganda has been placed in Pool B alongside Hong Kong China, Tonga, and Mexico.
