Uganda’s campaign at the 2026 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup got off to a difficult start on Saturday after the Lady Cranes fell 43-10 to Kenya at RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
The East African derby began with promise after the pre-match anthems, but Kenya quickly took control with their pace, power and dominance at the set-piece.
The Lionesses constantly troubled Uganda through the mauls and controlled large parts of the contest, forcing the Lady Cranes onto the back foot for most of the afternoon.
Uganda still produced moments of fight. Cabrine Kirabo scored the Lady Cranes’ only try while Bushira Namutebi added the conversion and later kicked a penalty.
The visitors looked sharper after halftime and tried to play with more urgency, but handling mistakes and lapses in discipline continued to hurt them whenever they threatened to build momentum.
There were positives for Uganda despite the defeat. Getrude Kateesa, Unity Namulala, Justin Anguchia and Shaine Babirye all earned their first caps for the Lady Cranes XVs, gaining valuable experience at continental level.
Kenya captain Faith Livoi led from the front in a standout performance and was named Player of the Match.
Uganda now turn their focus to a much tougher test against South Africa on Wednesday, May 27, in Nairobi.
