“It’s going to be fire. Just come prepared. We are taking it all.” Those were the strong words from Makerere College School (MACOS) captain George Ogwete after his side won the third leg of the USRA Central Schools Boys Rugby 7s at Kyambogo College.

Ogwete’s confidence was backed by another dominant display from MACOS, who swept to the title in commanding fashion to move top of the overall standings with 63 points, three ahead of rivals London College.

MACOS were ruthless throughout the tournament, posting heavy victories, including a 64 point and a 50 point demolition, before defeating London College in the final to claim the circuit crown.

For Ogwete, the triumph was the result of a promise the team made earlier in the term.

“In high school there is something called tie and draw. We said we are not losing any other game until the end of the semester, so we kept our word and worked for it,” he said.

The captain also revealed that lessons from an earlier defeat to London College played a key role in their latest success.

“We realised something about the forwards, so we worked on them and came back strong,” Ogwete explained.

While MACOS celebrated, Luigi produced one of the surprises of the tournament by holding London College to a 19-19 draw in the pool stages. However, their impressive run ended in the quarterfinals with a narrow defeat to St Peter’s Naalya (SPENA).

With one circuit left, MACOS lead the standings on 63 points, followed by London College on 60, SPENA on 47, Kololo High on 45 and Luigi on 38.
