Timothy Awany has joined European football after completing a move to Bulgarian top flight side Botev Plovdiv, adding to the growing list of Uganda Cranes stars plying their trade across the continent.

The experienced defender was unveiled on Monday as Botev Plovdiv’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, bringing an end to a memorable seven-year stay at Israeli club FC Ashdod.

Awany arrives in Bulgaria seeking a fresh start after recovering from injury setbacks that limited his involvement during the latter stages of his time in Israel. Despite those challenges, the former KCCA FC captain leaves Ashdod as one of the club’s most respected foreign players, having made 190 appearances and established himself as a mainstay in the team.

“Timothy Aouani is the fourth addition to Botev Plovdiv’s summer squad. The central defender has signed a long-term contract with the “Canaries”.

“The 183cm defender had his first training session with the “yellow and black” team today. To date, Awani has 40 caps for the Ugandan national team.”

“Since the summer of 2019, Timothy has been part of the Israeli Ashdod, where he became a club legend and played 190 matches.”

Awany will wear shirt number 20 at his new club.

The move sees the 28-year-old join fellow Uganda Cranes internationals featuring in Europe, including Aziz Kayondo, who plays for FC Slovan Liberec in the Czech First League, Elio Capradossi at FC Universitatea Cluj in the Romanian Liga I., and Rogers Mato, who is featuring in Europe for Heart of Midlothian F.C. in the Scottish Premiership among others.

Founded in 1921, Botev Plovdiv is the oldest active football club in Bulgaria. The club has won two league titles, four Bulgarian Cups and one Super Cup, but finished eighth in the Bulgarian top flight last season.
