The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and MTN Uganda started a new partnership on Wednesday night in a glamorous event at Kampala Serena Hotel.

The telecommunications giant has replaced fellow big gun Airtel Uganda as the official sponsor for all of the national football teams and other related FUFA events for five years.

The development comes after the country’s football custodians and Airtel failed to reach an agreement to renew their most recent contract following its expiry in 2021.

The two parties first entered a partnership with FUFA back in 2013 for an initial four years in a deal worth approximately four billion Uganda shillings.

In 2017 upon expiry, the relationship was renewed for a huge sum of 10 billion, still, Uganda shillings meant to run for four years, ending in 2021.

On the other hand, MTN was the official Uganda Cranes sponsors till 2013, before FUFA took on Airtel.

Airtel’s reign witnessed the Cranes hitting back-to-back qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

As for MTN, the Cranes’ home matches attracted huge crowds, either at the Mandela National Stadium or at Nakivubo Stadium, due to their strong marketing.
