Kampala University stages late comeback to hold IUIU in UFL quarterfinal first leg

A dramatic late equalizer from Sharif Ssembatya helped Kampala University (KU) secure a 1-1 draw against Islamic University in Uganda in their University Football League quarterfinal first leg at the YES Center, Nsambya on Friday evening.

The visitors looked set to take a crucial away victory after Faisal Mumali broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, converting from the penalty spot. However, a red card to Musasizi Sadat in the 90th minute gave KU a lifeline, and they took full advantage deep into added time.

The match was a tight contest, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances in the opening half. The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute when IUIU were awarded a penalty and Faisal Mumali confidently slotted it home silencing the home crowd.

KU pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but IUIU remained compact, frustrating their attacks.

With 90 minutes on the clock, IUIU were reduced to 10 men when Musasizi Sadat received a second yellow card. The dismissal handed KU an indirect free kick in a dangerous area, setting up a tense finish.

As the added minutes ticked away, Sharif Ssembatya rose to the occasion, finding the back of the net to send the home fans into wild celebrations. His last-gasp goal ensured KU avoided a home defeat, keeping their semifinal hopes alive.
