Kyadondo FC suffered a setback in their Masaka Cup semifinal first leg, falling 3-1 to Buddu FC at Wankulukuku Muteesa II Stadium. The defeat leaves them with a mountain to climb in the return leg.

Despite taking an early lead through a well taken Isaac Ssenyunja goal, Kyadondo’s defense faltered in the latter stages of the first half, conceding twice in 5 minutes to give up their lead.

New recruit Michael Kayongo converted a cross from captain Pius Ssebulime while Mike Weraga scored a diving header in stoppage time to give Buddu a 2-1 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, Kyadondo pushed for an equalizer with substitute Isaac Musiima and Ssenyunja threatening but they were unable to break through Buddu’s defense. Kayongo completed his brace to secure Buddu’s 3-1 win and was awarded man of the match for his performance.

What the coaches said

Kyadondo’s head coach, Medi Nyanzi, remained optimistic despite the loss, citing injuries and illness as factors in his team’s performance. He vowed to bounce back in the return leg in Masaka.

Simon Dungu Dunga, a former teammate of Nyanzi’s, also analyzed the match, acknowledging Buddu’s victory but emphasizing the need for a strong performance in the return leg.

Nyanzi’s compatriot Simon Dungu Dunga also had his review on the match

“We won the game but we have to beat them again at home, we are going back to improve on the few weakness which appeared in today’s game,” he said.

Kyaggwe’s Narrow Win

In the other semifinal, Kyaggwe FC edged out Buwekula FC 2-1 at home. Steven Nyalimu scored twice for Kyaggwe, while Habert Asiimwe netted for Buwekula. The defeat at Bishops SS Mukono marked the end of Buweekula’s unbeaten run in the 2024 Masaza Cup.

The return leg of both semifinals will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2024.
