Plascon powered Buddu opened their 2026 Masaza Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Buluuli as Ssingo, Busujju and Kyaggwe also registered winning starts in their respective opening fixtures.
At the Kitovu Sports Arena on Sunday, June 21, hosts Buddu struck twice inside the opening quarter of an hour through Ronald Obed and Brian Tumusiime Matu. Buluuli pulled one back in the 37th minute of the first half, but it proved only to be a consolation.
The victory saw the three-time champions secure successive wins in opening Masaza Cup matches and extend their impressive home opening record to three consecutive victories.
For Buluuli, the 2011 champions suffered their first opening-day defeat since 2023 when they lost 4-2 away to Kyaggwe. In the previous two seasons, they had won their opening fixtures, beating Bulemeezi 1-0 in 2024 and Ssese 2-0 last year.
This was also the fourth consecutive year that Buluuli have started their campaign away from home. During that period, they have won twice and lost twice on opening day.
Elsewhere, two-time champions Ssingo also kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Kabula at Mityana Ssaza Ground.
Ssingo took an early lead through Shakur Kapio, but Amos Leku levelled matters for the visitors before Mathew Luswabi struck the winner for last season’s finalists.
The last time Ssingo opened their campaign at home was also the last time they won on opening day, when they beat Bugerere 2-0. Sunday’s victory over Kabula ended a two-year wait for an opening-day win.
Busujju also began on a winning note, edging Buvuma 1-0 at Kakindu Ground thanks to Peter Mudul’s late winner.
Kyaggwe, meanwhile, became the only side to register an away victory in this year’s opening round of fixtures. They defeated three-time champions Mawokota 1-0 in Buwama, with Lauben Lubwama scoring the only goal of the game.
The result ensured that Kyaggwe remained perfect in their last three opening fixtures.
In other matches, Busiro were held to a goalless draw by Gomba at Nabbingo, while Kooki came from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw against Bugerere at Ntenjeru Playground.
The 2026 edition had started on June 13 with holders Buweekula drawing 0-0 with Kyadondo. Action continued on June 20, with Butambala beating Mawogola 1-0, while Bulemeezi also fought back from behind to draw 1-1 with hosts Ssese.
The campaign will continue on June 27 and 28 with fixtures across all the 18 participating teams. The standout fixture will see Kyadondo host Buddu, while Kyaggwe take on Busiro and Bulemeezi welcome Mawokota.
