Makerere University secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Victoria University in their University Football League Group B opener on Thursday, September 19th 2024.

The match, which took place at the Makerere University ground, saw the visitors’ hopes dashed as they failed to repeat David’s miracle against Goliath in the Bible.

Coach Noah Mugerwa’s Victoria University had the first opportunity to take the lead, but Reagan Mugerwa failed to convert a one-on-one chance, smashing the ball direct to the goalkeeper.

However, Makerere University’s Frank Muteganga made the most of his opportunity, heading Herbert Wasswa’s free kick past the Victoria University goalkeeper in the 17th minute.

The hosts controlled much of the remaining play and even had a goal from Musa Male disallowed due to an offside call by assistant referee Ismael Matovu. Despite creating several other chances, the Enzymes were unable to extend their lead.

The match was marred by incidents of violence involving fans. In one instance, Makerere fans grabbed referee’s flag when it was up to rule Male offside during the ruled out goal. Additionally, Makerere University fans intervened to protect a vendor from security personnel who were attempting to prevent him from selling refreshments during halftime.

The teams are in group B with Ndejje University and Kumi University who are yet to play their first fixtures.
