- Mbarara City FC 1-3 SC Villa
Charles Lwanga came off the bench and changed the game as SC Villa fought from behind to beat Mbarara City 3-1 at Rwamwanja Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The forward played only 22 minutes but scored twice and assisted another to hand Villa a vital win in the Uganda Premier League title race.
For much of the match, Mbarara City looked the better side. The hosts controlled the early exchanges and kept Villa under pressure, while the visitors struggled to create clear chances.
Villa thought they had taken the lead in the first half through Geoffrey Gagganga, but the goal was ruled out after Frank Ssebufu was judged to have handled the ball in the buildup.
The game stayed goalless at halftime, with Mbarara City still looking the more dangerous side.
After the break, Villa Head coach Zeljko Kovacevic turned to his bench in search of a response, introducing Patrick Kakande, Diego Semugera and later Charles Lwanga.
But it was Mbarara City who finally broke through in the 69th minute when Clinton Kamugisha finished calmly to send the home fans into celebration.
Their lead lasted only moments, Lwanga quickly brought Villa level after reacting fastest inside the box to make it 1-1 in the 71st minute.
Three minutes later, he struck again, the substitute punished poor defending to complete Villa’s turnaround and leave Mbarara City stunned.
Villa then took full control of the game and sealed victory in the 81st minute when Lwanga set up Andrew Otim for the third goal.
The comeback win moves SC Villa to 55 points, above Kitara FC, as they remain in the hunt for a second place finish with a visit to NEC next before climaxing campaign at home to UPDF.
Mbarara City stay 13th on 23 points, six above the relegation zone with two matches left.
Elsewhere, KCCA FC also came from behind to beat UPDF FC 2-1 in Bombo to reduce the gap on leaders Vipers SC.
