The stage is set, the stakes are sky-high and the tension is palpable as Kitara FC, the reigning Uganda Cup champions, face Vipers SC in the first leg of the 2025 Uganda Cup semifinals tonight at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

While Vipers have their eyes on a historic domestic double, Kitara’s head coach, Wasswa Bbosa is not buying into the hype.

Calm but confident, Bbosa made his intentions clear in the build-up to the clash.

“We respect Vipers, but this is the semi-final. We are defending champions and the team is ready for the task ahead,” Bbosa said with a steely resolve.

For Kitara, this moment represents more than just a fixture, it’s another opportunity to prove they belong at the very top.

Having stunned BUL FC in a dramatic quarterfinal and famously knocking out Vipers in last season’s edition, the Masindi-based side enters this clash with both pedigree and purpose.

A boost in squad depth further strengthens their resolve. Forward duo George Ssenkaaba and Patrick Kaddu return from suspension while defender Benjamin Nyakoojo is fit again, timely reinforcements for a side looking to repeat history on hostile turf.

But the Vipers are a different beast this time after a rocky start to the season, a revival in form has seen them surge to the top of the Uganda Premier League.

Their gritty quarterfinal win over SC Villa reignited their hunger and now, the Uganda Cup adds another layer to their ambitions.

Assistant coach Fred Muhumuza acknowledged the challenge but expressed belief in his side’s depth and resilience.

“We have a busy month and a crowded fixture but we have a squad that can manoeuvre through. This is a different competition and Kitara is a tough opponent but we’ll give it our all,” said Muhumuza after the final training session.

This will be the second meeting between the two sides this season with their league encounter at Kitende still fresh in memory.

That familiarity only adds to the intrigue as each team tries to outwit the other on a night where margins will be razor-thin.

As both teams set their sights on Kadiba Stadium, the venue for the final, tonight’s encounter is not just about a place in the final.

For Vipers, it’s about completing the turnaround and etching their name in a historic double. For Kitara, it’s about defending their crown and proving last season was no fluke.

As the Uganda Cup semifinal stage kicks off, it remains a powerful avenue for nurturing grassroots talent, solidifying Plascon’s role in elevating Ugandan football.
