- Wakiso Giants vs Mbarara City – Wakissha | 4 PM
As the sun sets over Wakiso this Tuesday evening, one burning question will grip fans across the Uganda Premier League, Will Wakiso Giants manage to pull Mbarara City into the relegation zone?
In what is undoubtedly the most crucial fixture of the season for both sides, the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium is set to host a relegation dogfight between Wakiso Giants and Mbarara City.
With survival on the line, the clash promises not only tension and drama but also the potential to rewrite the bottom of the league table.
Currently, the Purple Sharks of Wakiso Giants find themselves drowning in the red zone, third from bottom with just 20 points.
Hovering three points above them in the final safe position on the 16-team log after 26 games are the Ankole Lions of Mbarara City.
That fragile cushion could vanish by the final whistle, with the head-to-head rule tilting in Wakiso’s favour should they manage a win after the two sides played out a goalless draw in the first leg at Kakyeka.
But form offers little comfort for either camp, Wakiso Giants have not won at home in their last 10 outings, a dire stretch that includes four losses and six draws.
However, they’ll draw inspiration from the history of the nine previous league meetings between the two sides. Wakiso boasts the upper hand with four victories, three of which came on home turf.
Meanwhile, Mbarara City arrives in disarray at Kabaka Kyabaggu. The club recently parted ways with head coach Livingstone Mbabazi, once a familiar figure in the Wakiso dugout.
With no permanent replacement named, interim coach Zaid Byekwaso carries the burden of steering a shaky ship that has now gone winless in ten straight matches.
Their two most recent away wins against fellow strugglers Mbale Heroes and Soltilo Bright Stars suggest Mbarara are capable of rising but will they when it counts?.
But Tuesday’s match is no ordinary battle. It’s a potential six-goal loss that could see them fall into the abyss of relegation, alongside already doomed Mbale Heroes and the precariously placed Soltilo Bright Stars.
For Wakiso, this is the proverbial “now or never.” A win not only drags Mbarara down but lifts the Purple Sharks to safety.
Around the league, eyes will also be on Soltilo Bright Stars as they visit UPDF in Bombo, Express’s clash with Kitara at Nakivubo, Maroons hosting Police at Luzira, and URA’s visit to Lugazi.
But none of those fixtures carries the weight and immediate consequence of the showdown in Wakiso.
