Vipers Soccer Club secured a timely first win of the season after overcoming league debutants Ntugasaze 3-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Saturday.
Gusto Mulongo, Chukwuma Odili, and Ceaser Manzoki scored the goals for Denis Lavagne’s side just in time before the international break.
League action is now on halt ahead of four international matches for the Uganda Cranes, scheduled across just twelve calendar days.
The Cranes begin away against Tunisia on September 24 before returning home to face Libya at Hoima Stadium. Next on the menu will be a double-header against DR Congo.
Back at Kitende, Mulongo opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he nodded Karim Watambala’s corner kick into the net to give the home fans hope and belief.
The visitors had opportunities to draw level, but those chances went to waste before Chukwuma doubled the hosts’ lead in the 60th minute. He finished with a fantastic strike after receiving a well-weighted long pass from substitute Farouk Miya.
Manzoki sealed the victory three minutes later when he turned Usama Arafat’s cutback into the net, with Miya again doing the heavy lifting in the buildup.
Vipers move into 11th position, while Ntugasaze remain rooted to the bottom of the table with zero points after four matches.
“Good win and it gives confidence to the players. Though, we understand that we have to improve in many areas still,” Lavagne noted after the win.
Victory comes as a relief to the champions, who lost their opening game 1-0 to Entebbe UPPC. The Kansai Plascon-sponsored side will hope to build on this momentum when league action returns next month.
