Seven-time Uganda Premier League champions Express FC have completed the launch of a women’s team.
It is the first time the Red Eagles have a female side in their long 66-year history.
Express Women Football Club, which will comprise students, will get off their journey in the Kampala regional women’s league in the forthcoming season.
The revelation was made by club president and Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka on Monday, asserting the team’s drive towards meeting all FUFA, CAF, and FIFA regulations.
“I’m excited about the Express Women Football team because it is an opportunity for the club to venture into something it had wanted for a long time,” he was quoted by the club website.
“We are following the FUFA, CAF, and FIFA regulations; so our fans should be excited because this will be handled well and with the support it deserves as we aim to promote women’s football.”
This has been about a month since both Vipers SC and KCCA FC announced Wakiso Hills WFC and Kampala Queens WFC as their women’s teams.
However, it’s only Maroons FC in the Startime UPL that boasts full-time ownership of a women’s team (She Maroons) in the topflight.
For Express, the timing of the initiative has received heavy backlash as they have recently endured financial difficulties.
The entirety of last season had reports of unpaid salaries and allowances to players and the coaching staff.
Due to financial constraints, the club is also struggling to tie down their experienced lot to new contracts, as well as getting in established new players.
