Baptist High School successfully defended the Kampala Zone netball trophy after edging hosts Kibuli Secondary School 23-21 in a thrilling final played on Friday, June 26.
Baptist continued their dominance throughout the championship, winning all their group stage matches. In the quarterfinals, they thrashed St Kizito SS 32-7 before eliminating Broadway SS in the semifinals to book a place in the final.
Hosts Kibuli SS also enjoyed an impressive campaign on home soil, winning all their matches en route to the final. They defeated Luzira SS 41-04 in the quarterfinals before overcoming Chwa II Memorial in the semifinals to set up a repeat of last year’s final against Baptist.
Despite falling short in the final, Kibuli SS qualified for the Ball Games II Nationals alongside Baptist High School, Kakungulu Memorial, Broadway SS, Chwa II Memorial and Kitebi SS. The six teams will represent Kampala Zone in netball at the national championships in Gulu.
In other disciplines, Kakungulu Memorial won the boys’ handball title, while Kibuli SS claimed the girls’ trophy after defeating Mbogo High in the single round-robin competition.
In volleyball, Mbogo High dethroned Nabisunsa Girls to win the girls’ title with a hard-fought 3-2 victory. In the boys’ category, Kyambogo College defeated Kibuli SS in the final of what was arguably the most attended competition.
In basketball 3×3, Mengo SS won the boys’ title after overcoming Kibuli SS, while Nabisunsa Girls maintained their dominance in the girls’ category, also defeating Kibuli SS.
