Raymond Barasa Mangoli’s nomination for the Uganda Premier League Most Valuable Player award has added a different feel to this season’s race.

In a contest usually dominated by strikers and attacking midfielders, the SC Villa defender has forced his way into the conversation through composure, consistency and leadership at the back.

Mangoli is among five players shortlisted for the league’s biggest individual award after playing a central role in Villa’s impressive defensive campaign.

The Jogoos have conceded just 15 goals in 28 matches, the best defensive record in the league this season.

The shortlist also features Abdul Karim Watambala, Frank Ssebuufu, Ivan Ahimbisibwe and Ambrose Kigozi, all of whom have enjoyed outstanding campaigns for their respective clubs.

KCCA FC striker Ivan Ahimbisibwe leads the nominees in goals scored with 13 league strikes and two assists.

The forward has carried much of KCCA’s attacking burden and remained key to their push near the top of the table.

League champions Vipers SC are represented by midfielder Abdul Karim Watambala, whose influence has stretched across the pitch all season.

Watambala registered 10 goals and four assists, regularly stepping up in important moments as the Venoms marched to the title.

SC Villa forward Frank Ssebuufu also made a strong case after contributing nine goals and five assists, the highest combined goal involvement among the nominees.

His performances helped Villa remain competitive throughout the campaign.

Entebbe UPPC forward Ambrose Kigozi completes the shortlist after emerging as one of the season’s surprise performers.

Kigozi scored 11 league goals and consistently troubled defenders despite playing outside the traditional title challengers.

The winner will be decided through voting ahead of the league awards ceremony, with fans expected to have a major say in who walks away with the MVP crown.
