As Uganda’s U17 Men’s National Football Team, the Cubs, gears up for its historic FIFA U17 World Cup debut in Qatar, former Uganda Cranes star Steven Bengo has joined the coaching team as assistant coach.

Bengo brings invaluable experience and a deep understanding of Ugandan football to the technical squad.

He will work alongside fellow assistant Saddam Ibrahim Juma under newly appointed head coach, Ghanaian Laryea Kingston.

KCCA FC’s goalkeeping coach, Yasin Mugabi, will oversee the Cubs’ goalkeepers, ensuring they are ready for the global stage.

The rest of the backroom team draws heavily on local football expertise. Former player Joram Katende has been named team manager, with Vincent Tumusiime, popularly known as Titi Camara, serving as team coordinator.

Patrick Ssenfuka, also a former KCCA FC player, manages kits, while Innocent Jejje, Rashid Kebba, and Aloysious Byamukama take on roles as team doctor, physiotherapist, and media officer, respectively.

Bengo and his team’s first test will be the CECAFA U17 Zonal Qualifiers in Ethiopia from 15th November to 4th December 2025.

As defending champions, Uganda aims for a top-three finish to secure a spot at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

With FIFA now hosting the U17 World Cup annually and Africa having ten slots, Uganda’s appearance in Qatar is a milestone for the nation.
