The Uganda Cranes returned to training at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Monday, January 13, with renewed focus after the squad was trimmed from 36 to 26 players.
As the media observed the session, speculation about omitted favourites lingered, but the coaching staff was fully focused on preparing the remaining squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, which is scheduled for February.
A cloud of excitement and curiosity hovered over the camp as rumours surfaced about potential international friendlies.
In an interview after training, Head Coach Paul Joseph Put shed light on the team’s plans, revealing critical details about upcoming matches and preparation strategies.
Plans for International Friendlies
Coach Put confirmed that Uganda had initially pursued a friendly with CHAN holders Senegal but faced communication challenges.
“First, we had contact with Senegal, but now they are quiet. So, we play Nigeria in Rwanda on the 18th of January,” he stated.
This match aims to sharpen the team’s competitive edge before the tournament.
He also added that discussions are also underway for a possible friendly against DR Congo;
“I have contacted DR Congo to make a connection in Dubai. If we handle it before the 24th, that’s if we can manage the visas.”
“But these are things I cannot say are 100% done because it’s the President and his committee that will make the decisions. I only came out and proposed,” Coach Put clarified.
Uganda will co-host the CHAN 2025 tournament with Kenya and Tanzania from February 1 to 28.
This landmark event presents a golden opportunity for the Cranes to showcase their growth and challenge for continental glory.
The coach’s emphasis on strong international friendlies underscores his commitment to refining the squad’s tactical and physical preparedness.
By competing against some of Africa’s best teams before the tournament, the Cranes aim to enter CHAN with confidence and a competitive edge.
