Blacks Power moved a step closer to Uganda Premier League promotion while Mbale Heroes’ painful fall finally became reality after an emotional weekend of FUFA Big League action.

At the Ebenezer University Playground in Lira, Blacks Power once again showed why they have led the race for most of the season, grinding out a hard earned 2-1 victory over Nebbi Central to remain top of the table.

The home side started brightly and needed only 10 minutes to break through. Michael Siiwu delivered a teasing cross into the area and Isaac Okello rose highest to power home a header that sent the Lira crowd into celebration.

Blacks Power controlled much of the first half but Nebbi Central stayed patient and found their moment before halftime.

David Ochirachan beat the offside trap and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Michael Okiria in the 40th minute to silence the home fans and level the contest.

The second half carried the tension of a title race, Blacks Power first thought they had the perfect chance to reclaim the lead when referee William Oloya awarded a penalty after Okech was brought down in the box.

But Nebbi Central survived as Siiwu saw his effort saved.

The relief was short lived, moments later, Blacks Power won another penalty after Okello was fouled inside the area.

This time Paul Oonyu stepped up and coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to restore the lead.

Nebbi Central pushed for another equaliser, but Blacks Power held firm to secure a victory that keeps them top with 51 points from 27 matches.

Siiwu nearly crowned the afternoon with a spectacular goal late on, his dipping long-range free-kick crashing against the crossbar in the closing minutes.

Before kickoff, both teams observed a moment of silence for football fan Joe “Biggie” Ebong, who reportedly passed away while watching an English Premier League match.

Elsewhere, Wakiso Giants took a huge step towards survival after edging Bunyaruguru United 3-2 in a thrilling contest at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

Bashir Mutanda stole the show with a hat-trick in one of the matches of the weekend.

Wakiso started strongly and Gerald Ogweti gave them an early lead in the second minute after finishing into an empty net.

Mutanda doubled the advantage in the 35th minute with a composed finish after a clever run behind the defence.

Bunyaruguru refused to fold and David Opio pulled one back before halftime to set up a tense second half.

Mutanda then took over completely. He converted from the penalty spot on the hour mark before heading in his third goal 15 minutes from time to seal a vital victory for Wakiso Giants, who climbed to 11th place with 31 points.

For Mbale Heroes, however, the season ended in heartbreak.

Their 1-0 defeat at home to Onduparaka officially confirmed relegation to the Eastern Regional League, capping off a miserable campaign for the former Uganda Premier League side.

Mahad Agussi struck just a minute after kickoff and the early goal proved enough to sink the hosts.

The match itself was surrounded by controversy after kickoff was delayed amid reports that Mbale Heroes had attempted to field players using other players’ licences.

The club’s problems have stretched far beyond the pitch.

Mbale Heroes were recently docked three points after failing to honour an away fixture against Nebbi Central.

Earlier in the season, they had also lost points for failing to travel for a match against Kigezi HomeBoyz.

Those deductions, combined with poor results and financial struggles, left the club rooted to the bottom with only 17 points from 27 matches.

With only three games remaining, survival is now mathematically impossible.

It marks a second straight relegation for Mbale Heroes following their drop from the Uganda Premier League last season, ending a difficult year in which players reportedly went months without pay as the club struggled to stay afloat.
