The reigning women’s National Basketball League champions, JKL Dolphins, have been drawn to play Rwanda’s APR (Armée Patriotique Rwandaise) in the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIBA Zone V Women’s Championship today at 6PM.
The Dolphins secured mixed results in their four group D games, finishing third, but this was enough to see them make the best 8.
They bossed Sudan-based Nile Legends, winning 84-30, with a massive showing from Ritah Imanishimwe, who notched 12 points, three rebounds and four steals.
Game two was more challenging, as they fell to Kenya Ports Authority 72-82. The team regrouped and put Tanzania’s J.K.T Stars to the sword, winning 89-41 behind a starry night from Evelyn Nakiyingi, who had 17 points, 5 points and 5 assists.
They would then fall to Rwanda’s REG (Rwanda Energy Group BBC), losing narrowly 65-66.
The 2019 Zone V Champions will go up against hometown heroes APR for a spot in the last 4.
The JKL Dolphins will be hoping for a better outing than their last game against a team from Rwanda, and the addition of Rose Amaniyo (KIU Rangers), Martha Soigi (KCCA Leopards), and Shakirah Nanvubya (UCU Lady Canons) to their roster will come in handy.
The 2023 FIBA Zone V Women’s Championship features nine clubs from six countries, with the hosts Rwanda fielding two sides in APR and REG, two sides from Tanzania, namely Vijana Queens and JKT Stars, Nile Legends from South Sudan, Kenya Ports Authority and Equity Bank from Kenya, and Gladiators from Burundi.
The top three teams will secure qualification for the 2023 FIBA Africa Women Championships, set to happen in Egypt from December 8 to 17.
