Relegation finally caught up with Angels Basketball Club on Saturday evening after a damaging 56-36 defeat to the UCU Lady Canons confirmed their drop from the National Basketball League.

The loss at YMCA Court was Angels’ 18th in 20 games this season, ending a difficult campaign that had slipped away weeks earlier. Against a relaxed UCU side, they never looked capable of turning things around.

The Lady Canons, despite resting most of their starters, took charge early and opened a 17-9 lead after the first quarter as Angels struggled to score.

Angels managed only seven points in the second quarter, repeatedly losing possession and failing to settle offensively. By halftime, they trailed 42-22.

Little changed after the break. Angels continued to struggle on both ends of the court, committing turnovers and missing open looks as UCU stretched the lead to 20 points heading into the final quarter.

The final period ended 14-14, but the game had already been decided. Angels endured another poor shooting night, making just two of their 28 attempts from three point range.

UCU were not much better from deep, hitting only three of 31 attempts, but their defensive discipline and control of the game proved enough.

Doreen Nakibuuka led the Lady Canons with 11 points while Sylivia Nantongo added 10 rebounds.

For Angels, Martha Likicho scored 10 points, the only player on her side to reach double figures.

Elsewhere at Lugogo on Sunday, the KCCA Leopards edged the JKL Lady Dolphins 63-61 after surviving a late comeback.
