Uganda Christian University (UCU) has qualified for the quarterfinals of the University Football League with one game to spare, following Kampala International University’s (KIU) 1-0 victory over Busitema University on Sunday.
Simon Kalyango‘s 36th-minute penalty separated the two sides in a match played under heavy rain. The game was temporarily abandoned at 57th min when the surface was deemed unplayable.
The result leaves UCU top of the group with 11 points, KIU second with seven points, Busitema third with five points, and Kumi bottom with three points.
UCU joins MUBS, Makerere, and Kampala University (KU) as the other teams that have already qualified for the quarterfinals.
Busitema went into the game with a chance of making the quarterfinals, needing to beat KIU and UCU in their last home game with a bigger margin to achieve this. However, this will no longer happen.
The league will resume with the final group stage games this week. On Tuesday, Makerere will battle Ndejje University.
