Vipers Sports Club owner, Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa used Vipers’ title coronation to call for greater investment in youth football after the Plascon powered Venoms sealed their eighth Uganda Premier League crown at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Vipers celebrate trophy.

Vipers rounded off their championship-winning season with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Express on Saturday evening.

Karim Watambala scored from the penalty spot before Gusto Mulongo added the second as the champions celebrated in front of their fans.

The Venoms had already wrapped up the title on the penultimate matchday following a 3-0 win away to Maroons at Wankulukuku.

After lifting the trophy, Mulindwa praised FUFA for organising the league and maintaining competition standards.

“I would like to thank FUFA for organising this tournament, the Premier League, because without them the competition wouldn’t be there,” Mulindwa said.

“We are grateful for the competition they have put in place and today the winners have been declared.”

Mulindwa also shifted focus to Uganda’s future, urging more support for youth football.

“We need more, especially in the youth teams,” he added.

“We have the under-15s who reached the finals of the Africa Cup Championship. If we get more sponsors and funding, we can make Ugandan football better.”

His remarks capped another dominant season for Vipers, who finished with 67 points from 30 matches, five ahead of second-placed KCCA.

The title was Vipers’ second in a row and their sixth league triumph in the last 10 years, showing their dominance in Ugandan football.

The Venoms are now the third-most successful club in Uganda Premier League history behind only SC Villa (17) and KCCA FC (13).

Saturday also brought a happy moment when Muzeyi Dan Sserunkuma returned from a long absence, replacing captain Milton Karisa in the 80th minute to loud applause from the Kitende crowd.

Elsewhere on the final day, KCCA beat Mbarara City 4-1, Calvary defeated NEC 2-0, SC Villa overcame UPDF 2-1, Entebbe UPPC mauled BUL 4-0, Maroons edged Lugazi 1-0, while Kitara and Police drew 2-2.
