Uganda Premier League record holders SC Villa squandered a huge opportunity to extend their table leadership after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Arua Hill SC.
Despite staying top with 43 points, Villa have played four games more than Vipers SC, who won 1-0 against UPDF FC, a win that took them to 35 points.
The Jogoo are also two games ahead of KCCA FC who have 38 points but also lost 2-0 to URA FC earlier on Wednesday.
At Wankulukuku, the guests got a colourful goal through Innocent Media, who struck well a Geriga Atendele cross as Villa slept on the job.
The hosts’ first real chance of the game fell to the versatile Gift Fred, but his goal-bound effort was deftly cleared off the line by defender Richard Matovu.
Joseph Kafumbe and Charles Bbaale then both rattled the bar in quick succession before Arua Hill goalkeeper Rogers Omedwa pushed the ball away.
What’s next for both teams?
Meanwhile, Arua Hill are now sixth with 30 points having played 20 matches, which is the second-fewest in the league after Vipers’ 18.
Villa will now get locked in a pulsating Kampala derby against KCCA in their next encounter, at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo on Sunday.
On the other hand, Arua Hill will be out to write the #Twaake campaign in bold letters in front of their home fans at Barifa Stadium as they play host Gaddafi FC.
