“This is not about opposing FUFA; it is about unity,” said Mike Suleiman Mutyaba at the unveiling of the Uganda Footballers Federation (UFF).
The former Uganda Cranes midfielder made it clear the new body is meant to bring players together, not divide them.
He said the federation will unite former and active footballers while supporting those in need.
Mutyaba pointed to unpaid salaries in club football, noting that some players go months without pay. He believes an independent platform will help players speak out.
“When clubs go over six months without paying players, it shows there are deeper challenges,” he said.
He also called for former players to be involved in preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, saying they can contribute in different roles.
Reflecting on the African Nations Championship 2024, Mutyaba said ex-players were left out and urged change going forward.

He also asked for recognition of Uganda’s 1978 AFCON team, including Paul Ssali.
“This is their time, and they should be recognised,” he said.
The federation also plans to form SACCOs and work with government to support players.
Despite its plans, the UFF says it is not in conflict with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, but hopes to work alongside it to improve player welfare.
