The Plascon co-sponsored Uganda Cup semi finals have set up a familiar and tense reunion, with Kitara and Vipers drawn to face each other again over two legs.
The draw, held at UMOJA House in Nakasero on Thursday, confirmed a clash that has quickly grown into one of the competition’s most compelling rivalries. In the other semi-final, URA will take on Sports Club Villa.
For Kitara and Vipers, recent history adds weight to the tie having just recently faced off in the Uganda Premier League duel that ended goalless.
Last season, Vipers knocked out Kitara at this stage, winning both legs 1-0 in a controlled and disciplined performance.
Abdul-Karim Watambala scored the decisive goal in the second leg at Butema, sealing Vipers’ place in the final and eventually their fourth title.
But Kitara have their own memories. A season earlier, they stunned Vipers in the quarter-finals, winning 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Paul Mucureezi was the hero that day, scoring twice before converting the winning spot kick.
That back and forth sets the tone for what lies ahead.
Kitara, champions of the 2023/24 season, will host the first leg at Royal Park in Butema, Hoima.
The return leg will be played at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, where Vipers will rely on home support and experience as defending champions.
In the other semi-final, URA will host the first leg against Villa at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with the return leg set for FUFA Stadium, Kadiba.
Villa come into the tie as the most successful side in the competition’s history, with nine titles. Vipers have won it four times, URA three, while Kitara are still building on their first triumph in 2023/24.
At the draw, Clubs were represented by different individuals, like Villa captain David Owori and head coach Zeljko Kovacevic, URA’s Joshua Lubwama Letti, and Vipers coach Ivan Jacky Minnaert.
