Soltilo Bright Stars’ goalkeeper Derrick Emmanuel Were grabbed the highest number of accolades at the University Football League Best of the Decade Awards gala, held yesterday at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

Were, who played for Uganda Christian University previously, walked away with three awards, the most by any nominee on the day.

He was named the Player of the Decade, Goalkeeper of the Decade, and was also named in the Best Eleven of the Decade at the glamorous event.

“It is an amazing feeling for me because it is always exciting when you are recognized,” a joyous Were said.

“The University League is a good platform for one to showcase their talent and as an individual, I have gained so much from it and I would like to urge the young ones to embrace it too,” he added.

Were was skipper of the Mukono based university team as they won their first University League trophy in 2019.

For the MVP accolade, Were shoved off good opponents in Cranes midfielder Yasser Mugerwa formerly of Nkumba University and Siraje Musindo formerly of MUST.
