NEC FC forward Richard Basangwa was rushed to hospital after a serious injury in the closing stages of their goalless draw with Express FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo on Tuesday evening.
The incident came late in the match following a dangerous challenge from Express substitute Glory Kisule, who appeared to strike Basangwa with an elbow or punch during a contested moment.
Basangwa immediately went down and required urgent medical attention.
The referee stopped play instantly and sent Kisule off with a straight red card. Medical staff treated Basangwa on the pitch for several minutes, but he did not respond well enough to continue and had to be evacuated to hospital.
Concerns were raised over the emergency response after reports that the stadium ambulance had a flat tire and lacked key equipment. Officials reportedly used a Toyota Land Cruiser to transport the injured player for further treatment.
The match eventually ended 0-0, but the result was overshadowed by the injury incident.
NEC remain unbeaten this year and sit fifth on 41 points. Express are 10th with 30 points.
NEC next host Mbarara City FC in Lugogo, while Express welcome BUL FC on Friday, April 24.
Elsewhere in the Uganda Premier League, Vipers SC stayed top after a 2-0 win over Buhimba United Saints in Butema. Police FC beat URA FC 2-1 in Kiira, UPDF FC earned their first win of 2026 with a strong performance, and KCCA FC edged Entebbe UPPC 1-0 away.
