  • NEC FC 1-4 SC Villa

SC Villa moved closer to a second-place finish after beating NEC 4-1 to end the hosts’ nineteen-match unbeaten run in the Uganda Premier League.

Charles Lwanga, whose future at Villa remains uncertain after failed contract talks, made the most of a rare start with two early goals as Villa took control at Lugogo.

Coach Zeljko Kovacevic made ten changes to the side that defeated URA in the Uganda Cup semi-final, but the visitors looked sharp from the start.

Lwanga opened the scoring in the 10th minute, beating Hannington Ssebwalunyo, who had gone more than ten league matches without conceding. The forward struck again eight minutes later to double Villa’s lead.

Geoffrey Gaganga added the third in the 35th minute as NEC struggled to recover before halftime.

Villa stayed comfortable in the second half despite being reduced to ten men after Farouk Matovu was sent off in the 82nd minute for a second yellow card.

Hassan Mubiru sealed the win with a fourth goal five minutes from time before Emmanuel Kulanga scored a late consolation for NEC.

The defeat leaves NEC sixth with 48 points, though they still have a game in hand. They will finish the season away to already relegated Calvary in Midigo.

Villa move to third on 58 points with one league match remaining and will host UPDF in their final game of the season.
