With less than two weeks to the kickoff of Hamz Cup’s third edition on June 6, the organizing committee announced a cash prize distribution extension to 8 teams from 4.
Speaking at the launch held at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo War Memorial, the host for the tournament, stadium Manager and the tournament’s secretary, Ashiraf Turyatunga, confirmed the decision.
“To continue making this tournament interesting, we have maintained our prize at 100 million, though this time we have decided to make more distribution to 8 teams from the four that got in the last editions.”
The tournament, which started two years back, had the entire 100 million distributed among the semifinalists and individual awards, with the winner bagging half of the prize.
This time round, the winner’s prize has been docked to 30 million, with 20 million split into quarterfinalists, with each team positioned fifth to eighth winning 5 million.
The other cash prizes were maintained: the fourth team shall win 10 million, the third placed 15 million, and the runners-up shall be entitled to 20 million, while individual awards receive a 5 million allocation.
This year’s tournament has 40 teams including defending champions Arrows FC confirmed to participate, with teams from rural areas across Uganda having joined this time. In the last editions, the tournament had teams from Kampala.
Turyatunga continued, explaining the purposes of the tournament aimed at by proprietor Hajji Hamis Kiggundu, “This tournament is our way of developing talents and giving back to Ugandans.”
The tournament’s technical director, Hakim Kasirye, confirmed that the competition will run for over four months, with all teams starting in the group stage before switching to knockout rounds and heading to the final.
