Pictorial: Fans impressively honour Mawejje’s Kampala last dance

Former Uganda Cranes midfielder, Tonny Mawejje had his first session of his last dance at Phillip Omondi stadium yesterday.

Fans turned up in big numbers despite of a serious drizzle as they paid respect to Mawejje’s 14 years at the national team, the Uganda Cranes.

The glittering football career punctuated by discipline and hard work started in Masaka district where he will have the final session of his last dance this Friday at Masaka Recreation Centre against the Uganda Cranes again.

Having played for the national team between 2004-2018 making 84 appearances and scoring eight goals, Mawejje had big names in his team that faced the young Cranes.

The celebrated lined up included former Uganda Cranes captains Denis Onyango and Geoffrey Massa, Joseph Ochaya, Isaac Isinde, Dan Wagaluka, Brian Umony, Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Mike Mutyaba, Godfrey Walusimbi, Hassan Wasswa, Emmanuel Okwi among others.

Mawejje was given a standing ovation in the 6th minute with fans, players from either side clapping in honour of his time in football that had him featuring at AFCON finals in Gabon as the best highlight. Mawejje always donned shirt number 6 for the Uganda Cranes.

He featured for 83 minutes before getting substituted amidst cheers from the fans. His side was leading 2-1 thanks to Emmanuel Okwi and Muhammad Shaban goals that cancelled out Hakim Kiwanuka’s opener.
