In a commanding display of rugby dominance, Thunderbirds soared to the summit of the 2025 Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership following a ruthless 68-00 dismantling of Nile Rapids on Wednesday evening at Kyadondo Rugby Club.

At the heart of the onslaught was Samiya Ayikoru who delivered a breathtaking individual performance, crossing the whitewash four times to top the scorers’ chart on the day.

Her relentless pace and precision set the tone for a Thunderbirds side that looked every bit the title contender.

Originally slated for March 1 at Damwaters, the Round 8 fixture had been postponed due to financial constraints faced by Nile Rapids.

Thunderbirds stepped in to facilitate the rescheduling and venue change to Kyadondo, ensuring the match was fulfilled and making the most of home advantage in the process.

Ayikoru was ably supported by Angella Nanyonjo who bagged a hat-trick of tries, while Asha Nakityo, Phyllis Apio, Janat Nandudu, Yvonne Najjuma, and Agnes Nakuya each added one try apiece.

Kicking duties were shared as Nandudu and Mary Kyoita converted four of the attempts between them.

The result lifts Thunderbirds to 50 points from 11 matches, matching defending champions Black Pearls in the standings but overtaking them on points difference.

With just two rounds remaining, the title race has narrowed into a two-horse sprint to the finish.

Thunderbirds have a bye in the upcoming Round 11, while Black Pearls face Avengers at Kings Park.

All roads will then lead back to Kyadondo for the season finale on March 17, a decisive head-to-head clash between Thunderbirds and Black Pearls that will determine the 2025 champions.
