Uganda Premier League | Tuesday | MD 27

  • Wakiso Giants 0-1 Mbarara City
  • Lugazi 0-1 URA
  • Maroons 1-0 Police
  • UPDF 1-0 Soltilo Bright Stars
  • Express 1-0 Kitara

Tuesday proved to be a day of narrow margins and monumental consequences in the Uganda Premier League, as all five fixtures ended 1-0, each goal carrying weight far beyond the scoreline. From relegation drama to top-four battles, every match was a story in itself.

  • Bright stars fall from the Heavens

The day’s biggest headline came from Bombo, where Bright Stars FC were officially relegated from the Uganda Premier League after an 11-year stint in the top flight.

A 1-0 defeat to UPDF FC, courtesy of a Joseph Jjanjali strike, sealed their fate.

It was a long time coming. The club, promoted in the 2013/14 season after winning the FUFA Big League, had struggled throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

Off-field issues, including the resignation of founding members, salary delays, and the withdrawal of Japanese funders, had paralyzed the club’s operations.

On the pitch, a mass exodus of key players and the absence of a proper head coach after Joseph Mutyaba’s sacking only deepened the crisis.

Tuesday’s loss, combined with Mbarara City’s 1-0 win over Wakiso Giants, confirmed their relegation, joining Mbale Heroes FC in the drop zone.

  • Mbarara City roar in relegation six-pointer

At Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium, Mbarara City FC took a massive step toward survival with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wakiso Giants.

Despite entering the game without head coach Livingstone Mbabazi who was sacked just days earlier, the Ankole Lions dug deep.

The match turned in their favour when Wakiso’s Marvin Oshawa missed a third-minute penalty, followed by a red card for defender Shaibu Mtita on the half-hour.

Even then, the Purple Sharks held on until the 83rd minute, when Peter Onzima fired Mbarara City into a critical lead.

The win lifts Mbarara to 26 points in 13th place, just a few results away from safety.

Wakiso Giants, now desperate, must win all three of their remaining matches against URA FC, KCCA FC and Police FC and hope Mbarara falters.

  • Maroons edge Police in armed forces derby

Over at Luzira, Maroons FC emerged victorious in the Armed Forces derby, edging out Police FC 1-0. Ivan Mayanja’s 26th-minute goal not only earned Maroons bragging rights but also served as sweet revenge after Police had knocked them out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

The win sees Maroons rise to sixth place on 40 points, while Police remain in 12th with 30, still uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.

  • URA steal it at the death against Lugazi

In Lugazi, URA FC ended a three-match winless streak with a dramatic late winner against hosts Lugazi FC. Second-half substitute Bruno Bunyaga latched onto an Enock Walusimbi cross in the 90th minute to give the Tax Collectors all three points.

Despite a solid showing from Lugazi, including a late chance that rattled the crossbar, the visitors’ persistence paid off.

The win keeps URA in fourth place on 46 points, with their top-three hopes still alive. Lugazi, stuck in 11th with 31 points, will now need to reassess their chances of a strong finish in their debut top-tier campaign.

  • Express revenge against Kitara

Under the floodlights of Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo, Rashid Kawawa’s 56th-minute goal powered Express to their 11th win of the season. This was projected as revenge towards their 7-0 loss against the Hoima side at the Royal Park.

The win saw Express climb to 7th on the Log with 39 points, a point past Kitara and SC Villa.

Uganda Premier League MatchDay 27 action will be concluded on Wednesday, May 7th with the fixtures below;

  • SC Villa Vs KCCA- Muteesa II Stadium | Wankulukuku | 4 PM
  • Vipers Vs Mbale Heroes – Kitende | 7PM
