Mbarara City eased relegation pressure with an edgy 2-1 win over Express on Tuesday at Rwamwanja Stadium.

The Ankole Lions ended a nine game winless run with a result they badly needed.

They came into the match 14th with 17 points, just two above the red zone, and played with urgency from the start.

Their bright opening paid off in the 8th minute when Ian Amanya set up on form Clinton Kamugisha to score.

Express responded quickly, with Kenneth Kimera equalising seven minutes later.

The game stayed tight, but Mbarara City found the breakthrough after the break. Amanya turned scorer in the 56th minute, finishing off a move to restore the lead.

Express pushed for another equaliser and nearly got it, but Henry Wamala’s effort hit the woodwork.

Mbarara City held on to secure three points that lift them to 20, still 14th but now five points clear of the relegation zone with four games left.

Express remain 10th on 30 points from 26 matches.

Next, Mbarara City visit Lugazi on May 6, while Express travel to Buhimba United Saints on May 8.
