Black Pearls Opt Out of Women’s Premiership

Black Pearls’ dominance in Uganda’s women’s rugby has come to a sudden pause. The four-time defending champions have pulled out of the league, citing financial constraints.

The decision follows their failure to honour a home fixture against Nile Rapids at Kings Park Arena last Saturday. Soon after, the club confirmed it would not continue with its title defence in 2026.

In a statement released Monday evening, the Uganda Rugby Union acknowledged the withdrawal and pointed to the ongoing challenges women’s clubs face in raising squads and meeting matchday demands.

A meeting between union officials and Black Pearls representatives earlier that day confirmed the decision was final.

Their exit leaves the league with six teams and opens up the title race. Thunderbirds, Avengers, and Nile Rapids now stand as early contenders for a crown the Pearls have held for years.

The union says the Black Pearls will be free to return next season, with no promotion or relegation in place this year.
