ISSAU 6th Edition stages highly anticipated clashes as Greenlight, Kampala Islamic learn opponents

The Inter Islamic Secondary Schools Association in Uganda (ISSAU) sporting and theology championship returns this weekend for its sixth edition, with highly anticipated group stage clashes already setting the tone for another exciting tournament.

Defending champions Greenlight Islamic SS Nansana, last year’s finalists Kampala Islamic SS Kireka and former champions Top Times HS Kyengera were all seeded following their performances in the previous edition and have landed challenging opponents in the group stage draws.

The draws were conducted on Wednesday, June 24, at Top Times HS Kyengera by Head Teacher Hamid Ddumba, also ISSAU head of Sports together with ISSAU General Secretary Mudathir Kule.

Two-time football champions and defending holders Greenlight Islamic SS Nansana were drawn in Group A alongside Hamdan Islamic SS Nakifuma, Rabiha HS Bombo and Ibun Kathir Islamic SS Buwambo.

Hosts Buziga Islamic and Theology Institute headline Group B together with last year’s third-placed side and former champions Top Times HS Kyengera. Kisaasi Muslim SS and Kasawo Islamic SS complete the group.

Although Group C still awaits confirmation of one more team, it has already generated huge anticipation as last year’s finalists Kampala Islamic SS Kireka are set to renew their rivalry with two-time champions Madina Islamic SS Nsangi.

In the previous edition, Kampala Islamic eliminated hosts Madina Islamic at the quarterfinal stage, ending the Nsangi side’s dominance alongside Greenlight Islamic. Bilal Islamic SS Bwaise are also in Group C, while a late entrant will complete the pool.

Away from football, the netball competition has so far attracted nine confirmed teams, with three more expected to complete the draw.

Defending champions and record winners Madina Islamic SS Nsangi, who have won two of the three editions held so far, were drawn in Group A alongside hosts Buziga Islamic and Kampala Islamic, with Late Comer 3 expected to complete the group.

Meanwhile, Greenlight Islamic SS Nansana, who have reached the final in all three previous editions and won one title, have been drawn in Group C alongside rivals Bilal Islamic SS Bwaise and Ibun Kathir Islamic SS Buwambo as they await Late Comer 2.

Emerging force Hamdan Islamic SS Nakifuma were placed in Group B together with Rabiha HS Bombo and Top Times HS Kyengera, with Late Comer 1 expected to complete the group.

Madina Islamic won the netball title in 2023 and 2025, while Greenlight Islamic triumphed in 2024. No other team has ever reached the final.

Volleyball will also continue for its fourth straight year, having been introduced alongside netball. Qamar High School Bunamwaya remain the dominant force, winning the titles in 2023 and 2025, while Bugembe Islamic claimed the 2024 crown. The participating teams for this year’s competition will be unveiled on Saturday morning.

In line with ISSAU’s continued expansion, basketball will be introduced for the first time this year, with the confirmed teams also set to be announced on Saturday.

The activities will commence on Friday, June 26, at Bilal Islamic SS Bwaise with Quran recitation competitions for both boys and girls, public speaking in English and Arabic, as well as Hadith, Quiz and Poetry contests.

The Inter Islamic Secondary Schools Association in Uganda sporting and theology championship started in 2019, took a forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed in 2022.

Madina Islamic hosted the first two editions, while Hamdan Islamic SS and Emirates College Nkoowe jointly hosted the third edition. Wakiso Muslim Secondary School hosted the fourth edition before the championship returned to Madina Islamic in 2025.
