- LOCONA 1-0 Oxford
Richmond Wasswa scored the all-important goal as London College Nansana (LOCONA) defeated Oxford High School 1-0 in the opening match of the Nansana Sports District Weekend Football League.
After securing victory in the season opener, LOCONA captain Amaar Silver Kuteesa expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and outlined their ambitions for the campaign.
“We have always been waiting to play in the Post Primary Championships, but an extended opportunity arrived with this annual league. We are glad to have started with a win after working as a team, and we are looking to continue in the same manner and win the league,” Kuteesa said.
The opening ceremony, held at Alliance High School, marked the start of the third edition of the league involving schools in the USSSA Nansana Sports District. The event was graced by USSSA Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mugisha Banage.

Addressing students and officials at the event, Banage described the league as an important platform for talent development.
“This is an open opportunity to improve your sporting skills. Therefore, I call upon all schools to embrace it, and I also urge other zones to adopt this Weekend Football League,” Banage said.
“We understand that during our usual championships, we only accommodate a few schools, but this league can involve all schools across the country and help develop talent through regular competition. Sports remain the biggest avenue for creating social capital for all participants,” he added.

This year’s edition has grown to 17 participating schools, up from 13 in last year’s competition. Schools have also been encouraged to register girls’ football teams, according to the initiative’s chairman, Simon Mushabe.
“As we continue our commitment to talent identification and development, this project has not only helped us achieve that but has also improved performance in our schools. For the first time, a school from Nansana finished sixth at the USSSA National Championship,” Mushabe noted.
“Therefore, as the model sports district for the Weekend League, we have decided that every school participating in boys’ football must also field a girls’ football team. This time, we have increased the number of registered teams to 17 from 13,” he added.
The Weekend League kicked off on June 29 and will run until the end of the year, with schools playing home and away matches across the Nansana Sports District.
Greenlight Islamic Secondary School are the defending champions, having won the first two editions of the league since its inception in 2024.
