“I would say it’s been a good show. This is my first time at such a championship, and we’ve learnt a lot,” said Davis Ssuna, moments after Sport-S Volleyball Club bowed out of the continental stage in Kigali.

The 20 year old setter, fresh out of senior six and awaiting university, chose perspective over disappointment after Sport-S fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22) to Rwanda Energy Group Volleyball Club(REG) in the round of 16 of the 2026 CAVB Africa Men’s Volleyball Club Championship on April 29.

“We have young players, many of us here for the first time,” Ssuna added. “It’s a chance to learn and improve.”

On the court, REG’s experience told. They controlled the match and stayed calm in key moments, especially late in the third set when Sport-S pushed but couldn’t force a comeback.

The result sends the Rwandan side into the quarterfinals against Kenya Ports Authority, while Sport-S shift to classification matches for places 9–16.

For Ssuna, the pressure of the stage was real but expected. “We came knowing there is pressure, and you can’t stop it,” he said.

“You just have to talk to yourself and take the chance.”

It was a similar story to their 2025 Zone V meeting, where REG also came out on top, though in a tighter contest. This time, the gap showed but so did Sport-S’s potential.
